Case Study

55 year old female presents with severe pain left dorsal mid foot pain for 2 months with no specific trauma to exclude a possible stress fracture. The patient also has low vitamin D levels with a strong family history of osteoporosis. The patient had a normal MRI and X-Ray. Figure 1. demonstrates scan evidence of an acute fracture at the left 2nd metatarsal base with associated tarsometatarsal synovitis. Due to the nature of the minimal trauma fracture, the patient was recommended to have a Bone Mineral Densitometry scan performed to assess for osteoporosis.

Bone scans can also be used in the assessment of skeletal metastasis as demonstrated in Figure 2. This patient presented with increasing PSA levels with a diagnosis of Prostate Carcinoma 3 years prior treated with radical prostatectomy and hormone therapy (zolodex). The scan demonstrates multiple sites of metastatic deposit throughout the vertebral column, pelvic bones and ribs.
